The year was 1994 and a Hull graffiti legend was born. If you ever came into Hull Paragon Station on the train anytime between 1994 and 2002 you’d have seen the immortal words – Lithium Joe – Welcome to Joe Town writ proud and large on the side of a Victorian house at the end of a terrace on Park St.
I was quite stunned to find out today that there’s been a Facebook group dedicated to this graffiti! True, it’s rare to come across anyone in Hull who doesn’t know the name Lithium Joe from that graffiti (I was guitarist in Lithium Joe) but to have Facebook groups dedicated to it… sheesh!!
Sadly British Rail consigned a bona fide piece of Hull folklore to the historical dustbin by painting over it sometime in the last 5 years or so. Thanks to my good friends Mr Nick Quantrill and Mr Simon Notton, here’s the evidence it ever existed at all.
Happy days indeed.

Well what can I say? This is by far the closest I have ever got to fame, or should that be infamy?
The amount of times I have had to carry a photo with me to prove to many ex-pat hullites down south that I was there on that fateful evening of shameless street art! I even worked with someone whos sister I had apparently played monopoly with in the flat that night! Rock & Roll Eh!!!!!
Bloody hell Notton, keep your voice down! It’s alright shamelessly defacing public property for everybody to see, but you don’t admit to playing monopoly with someone’s sister!! Good lord, you’ll have us all bloody shot man!!!
When we gonna see you again then Mr? It’s been criminally too long mate.
Oh – happy (belated) birthday too! Mine’s a month before yours (4.8.72) so it always sticks in my mind.
But do you remember why I had to play Monopoly with said ginger lass my son? If you don’t i have the photographic eveidence to remind you? I wont post it though as she is now a happilly married young lady!
